Director of Operations (BESS – Technical)
Location: Portland, OR, Denver, CO (hybrid), or remote
This role will be responsible for overseeing the operational asset performance by leading grid operations, field services, performance engineering, and operations engineering to ensure safe, reliable, and market-optimized operation of BESS assets. The role directs field activities, establishes standard operating procedures and protocols, and oversees outage coordination. This person will also serve as Operations Safety Director, providing strategic leadership and staff development, fostering a culture of safety, quality, and accountability across the organization.
Ideal candidates will have substantial utility-scale energy asset experience, combining control room and hands-on technical expertise. Proven leadership in multi-disciplinary teams, maintenance programs, and ISO/RTO market optimization is required. Strong technical fluency in inverter-based systems, high-voltage safety, SCADA/EMS platforms, and outage response is essential, along with the ability to translate operational issues into business impacts and maintain effective relationships with remote operations centers, OEMs, and O&M partners. Candidates should be disciplined, safety-driven, and capable of building scalable processes and guiding engineering and field service teams.

Ideal Candidate Profile: Senior operations leader with deep grid operations experience. Must have real control room exposure; ideally also has hands-on field work, or close proximity to. Engineering background or degree strongly preferred, especially with high-voltage systems. Experience setting up or helping stand up a NOC/control room is ideal; at minimum must have worked adjacent to or in a control room environment. This person will guide the company in building operational processes and potentially establishing internal control room capabilities.
Experience Requirements:
- 10+ years total experience in energy or power operations
- 5+ years in leadership or people management roles
- Direct control room or NOC experience required. Experience setting up a NOC/control room ideal.
- Strong understanding of high-voltage systems and inverter-based assets
- Demonstrated experience with inverter-based resources (IBRs), including battery energy storage systems and/or utility-scale solar PV. Candidates must have operational exposure to inverter-driven assets, including interaction with control room environments, grid operations, and third-party O&M teams supporting IBR fleets.
